Buying and Selling Cards: The 2026 Guide
Sports cards and Pokémon: what a card is worth, when grading pays, and how to sell it
115 pages, 38 chapters in six parts. Every number has a source. Where the hobby's "facts" turn out to be wrong, the guide says so and shows why.
Guide last revised · Edition 2026.2
The short answer
A PSA 10 is the slab that sells for the most. On all seven cards measured for the Grader Comparison Chart, a PSA 10 sold for more than every BGS 9.5, SGC 10 and CGC 10 of the same card, and a BGS 9.5 fetched 33% to 67% of the PSA 10 price. One grade down, the gap mostly closes. The only holder that beat PSA was a scarcer grade: CGC Pristine 10, at 104% of the PSA 10 on 17 sales of one card. The chart that ships with Buying and Selling Cards: The 2026 Guide, published by Coastal Directory LLC, prints every figure with its sale count, from 1,659 sold sales.

PSA vs BGS vs SGC vs CGC: which slab sells for more?
Same card, top grade, sold prices only: 1,084 sales across seven cards. PSA 10 is the benchmark.
| Holder and grade | Price vs the same card in PSA 10 | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| PSA 10 | Benchmark (100%). Sold highest on all seven cards | 657 PSA sales across 7 cards |
| BGS 9.5 | 33–67% of the PSA 10 | 366 BGS sales across 7 cards |
| SGC 10 | 50–70% of the PSA 10 | 40 SGC sales across 4 cards |
| CGC 10 | 44–64% of the PSA 10 | 21 CGC sales across 3 cards. Thin |
| CGC Pristine 10 | 104% of the PSA 10. A scarcer grade, not an equivalent | 17 sales, one card (2021 Umbreon VMAX #215) |
One grade down the spread mostly closes. On the 2018 Prizm Luka Dončić #280, a BGS 9 sold for 113% of the PSA 9 and an SGC 9 for 85%, on 5 and 11 sales. The PSA premium is a gem-grade premium, not a brand premium.
Method: sold prices from 130point.com (eBay including accepted Best Offers, plus Fanatics Collect, Goldin, MySlabs and Heritage), trailing 14-month window, pulled early September 2026. Strict medians, one exclusion list per card across every grade, reprints excluded by set name. One-sale cells such as BGS Black Label are printed in the chart but never turned into a rate.
What do people get wrong about grading cards?
Several widely held beliefs died during the research for this guide. These three cost people real money.
What people say
"A BGS 9.5 is worth about the same as a PSA 10."
What's actually true
Not in the sold data. On seven cards measured, PSA 10 sold highest every time, and a BGS 9.5 fetched roughly a third to two-thirds of the PSA 10 price. Grader Comparison Chart.
What people say
"The PSA premium is a brand premium."
What's actually true
It's a gem-grade premium. One grade down the gap mostly closes. On the one card priced in all four holders, a BGS 9 sold for more than a PSA 9. Grader Comparison Chart.
What people say
"If it looks sharp, send it in."
What's actually true
Most cards should not be graded. The fee plus shipping both ways has to clear the gap between raw and graded at the grade you honestly expect. Part V runs the math.

Who is this cards guide for?
The shop behind the counter knows its buy rate. The seller walking in with a shoebox doesn't. Whoever trimmed a card knows exactly where to look. The buyer scrolling a Whatnot stream at 11pm doesn't.
This guide moves you to the informed side of the table.
Maybe you checked the phone, you know what the card goes for, and the number that came back across the counter was a third of it. Both numbers are real. Nobody's lying. That gap is what this guide is about: how a dealer prices a buy, and how to get a better number than the first one you're offered.
What does the 2026 cards guide cover?
38 chapters in six parts.

The Market
The state of the hobby in 2026, how grading works across PSA, BGS, SGC, CGC and TAG, how cards are really priced, and the fraud file: fake slabs, trimmed cards, fake Pokémon and resealed wax.

Questions people ask before buying
How much is the 2026 cards guide?
$26.99 on its own, or $49.99 for the Collx Collector's Set, which adds the Coins and Comics guides and their extras bundles. Newsletter subscribers pay $16.99 and $29.99.
Is this a price guide?
No. Price guides go stale within a quarter. This one teaches you to find the current number yourself, and the Quarterly Market Addendum keeps its figures fresh.
Does it cover Pokémon and other trading card games, or just sports?
Both. Chapter 5 is a full Pokémon playbook, Chapter 27 covers the other trading card games, and the Grader Comparison Chart measures Pokémon alongside modern sports rookies and vintage.
Is a PSA 10 worth more than a BGS 9.5?
Yes, on every card measured. Across seven cards a BGS 9.5 sold for 33% to 67% of the PSA 10 price, on 366 BGS sales. The widest gap was the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. #1, where the BGS 9.5 fetched 33%. Grader Comparison Chart.
Should I grade with PSA, BGS, SGC or CGC?
If you expect a 10 and plan to sell, PSA sold highest on all seven cards measured. If you honestly expect a 9, the holder matters much less, because one grade down the gap mostly closes. Part V runs the grading math, with the fee and shipping both ways included.
I have a box of cards and just want to sell it. Is this useful?
That's one of the cases it was written for. Part V has the inherited-collection playbook, and Part VI covers selling through shops, shows and estate sales.
What format is it, and how do I get it?
PDF, downloadable the moment you pay. Readable on a phone at the shop counter.
What happens when the 2027 edition comes out?
You get it free, on the same download page. The quarterly addendums land there too, and the Q4 2026 issue is already up.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. You have 7 days, no questions asked. Email hello@coastaldirectoryllc.com within 7 days of purchase.
